This beautiful coffee table / model railway display unit has been meticulously made by hand from boards of quarter sawn Scottish Oak sourced from Connel near Oban. My client has a beautiful model railway set that he wanted to keep free from dust whilst still able to operate as desired. He commissioned me to design and make a suitable unit that would satisfy this requirement, and look beautiful alongside his existing furniture. The table has been constructed using traditional cabinet making techniques throughout, including frame and panel joinery with a 1.5mm shadow gap around each panel to add a pleasing visual aesthetic. A key requirement was for the table top to lift off completely to allow access inside, with the glass remaining flush and secure within the surrounding frame. This was achieved using custom cut toughened glass with a bespoke underside fixing system. Rare earth magnets provide both security and location of the top, and cables are discretely fed via slots cut into both cabinet base and shelf. The table has a very high quality protective oil finish that is both water and heat resistant, with a beautiful warm tint that has been carefully chosen to blend seamlessly into it’s new surroundings.
